Bamboo

Worldwide, well over 1,500 bamboo species are known. However, only a few are suitable for building split cane fly rods. In Europe and America, almost exclusively Chinese bamboo, usually called "Tonkin" (Pseudosasa amabilis; formerly Arundinaria amabilis), is used. The material comes predominantly from the province of Guangdong in southwest China. Its high density of strong fibers, its hardness, and its elasticity make it the ideal rod-building material.

It is the bamboo that ultimately creates the fascination of a split bamboo!

Hardly any other material has managed to be as present in all areas of life as bamboo.

My tour...

My bamboo

Selecting my own bamboo at its birthplace was a lifelong dream. I consider it a privilege to have accompanied Andy Royer on his buying trip to China in 2010, an indescribable experience, together with Glen Bracket and Dave Delissi from Sweetgrass Rods and Robert Stroh from Munich.

Aozai

In southwest China, in the province of Kwantung, lies Aozai, the center of trade in Arundinaria amabilis, our rod-weaving bamboo. A picture is worth a thousand words!
